Travel Safe Abroad

Register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. 

Ensure guardians have a valid passport. 

Ensure all passports have at least 6 months before they expire.

Make digital and print copies of passports and visas. 

Ensure medications are legal in the county you are visiting.

Learn how to dial and call the country(s) you are visiting with the appropriate country codes and + symbol; alternatively, learn how to dial US numbers from abroad. Have several communication apps to use (FaceTime, Signal, WhatsApp, etc.).

Have a printed version of phone numbers and email addresses for chaperones, friends and family both on the trip and back home in case you no longer have your phone.

Know the
US Embassy's phone number for the country you are in. Store that number in your phone and on your printed list. Store the number(s) to properly dial from the country you will be. Every US Embassy has "American Citizen Services" ---always ask for "American Citizen Services" or the "Duty Agent."

Create a trip-specific and seperate family passcode/phrase to use in the event of suspicious activity or communications.  

Ensure your mobile phone service provider has coverage overseas. Less safety and more financial, learn how to set up an international plan so the costs aren't exorbitant.
